The opportunity to own a Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Crew Cab rarely presents itself, and we’re delighted to offer this particularly special example. Dating from 1970 and originally imported from South Africa, it combines the practicality of a pick-up with the usability of a five-seater, making it a unique Volkswagen T2.
The ‘Crew Cab’ sits in the middle ground between a single-cab pick-up and a Kombi. With five proper seats, substantial legroom, walk-through access and a genuine pick-up bed, it offers something that’s difficult to replicate with either a Kombi or single-cab without making compromises. It’s a vehicle you can throw a set of wheels, tools or camping gear in the back on a weekday, then use with the family on the weekends.
Further separating this from the majority is its Subaru-powered engine: an EJ25 in naturally aspirated form, typically producing around 160bhp. That’s more than enough to keep up with modern traffic, cruise comfortably at 70mph and make every drive an exciting one. The gearbox remains as its original 4-speed manual.
With the additional engine power comes the need for extra stopping power, so this T2 has been fitted with servo-assisted front disc brakes.
Inside, all the seat cushions and door cards have been reupholstered in black vinyl with tartan centre fabric, complemented by fresh headlining and sun visors in traditional Volkswagen perforated vinyl. Behind the dashboard, a hot-air fan has been installed, and incorporated into the clocks is a rev counter and oil temperature gauge.
The exterior remains largely original, with a respray carried out in white over turquoise, which was reportedly completed prior to its import to the UK in 2021. The rear bed features wooden panelling with aluminium strips to preserve the load bed.
It is important to emphasise that the underside is impressively solid and structurally sound, standing as a testament to the vehicle’s age and careful preservation over the years.
This is a genuinely versatile and highly unusual Volkswagen with plenty of character. Opportunities to become the custodian of a Crew Cab like this don’t come around often, and we expect this one to attract attention from enthusiasts and those simply looking for something truly different.
