This takes us back to the days when rock-solid, well-specified imported classic Volkswagens were far more common than they are today, making examples like this T2 a genuine pleasure to encounter. This 1971 Type 2 Bay Window is owned by Just Kampers, a leading UK-based specialist in parts and accessories for Volkswagen camper vans and aircooled vehicles, and we’re honoured to facilitate it’s sale on their behalf.
Behind this T2 lies excellent provenance. Previously supplied by Type 2 Detectives to Just Kampers, it later became part of a collaborative project with EMPI, aftermarket suppliers and distributors of parts for aircooled Volkswagens. The result is this unique build, featuring an extensive range of upgrades drawn from both companies’ parts catalogues.
Confirmed by its M-Codes, this T2 was originally specified as a Kombi with a right-hand sliding door, left-hand drive configuration, and a Westfalia Campmobile interior without a pop-top roof – a configuration it still retains today. Originally supplied to the USA (New York), it was first registered in the UK in January 2015 and has since had four British keepers.
A key highlight of this project is the EMPI 1,914cc turn-key engine, which was a newly released product at the time and supported by Just Kampers as part of its marketing programme. The engine is paired with twin EMPI 40K carburettors, an electronic ignition kit with high-output coil and a full stainless steel exhaust system.
Contributing to its distinctive appearance is the lifted stance, achieved through an adjustable raised ride height. Furthermore, the rear arches have been neatly modified with extra clearance to allow easy removal of the 15-inch EMPI Fuchs alloy wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T III tyres. Uprated front and rear anti-roll bars help keep these in contact with the road.
Most importantly, this T2 boasts a structurally solid, rust free chassis. The bodywork presents in excellent condition overall, showing only a small number of minor paintwork blemishes.
Inside, the camper retains its original Westfalia Campmobile furnishings, including the factory table. All seats and door cards have been reupholstered in red and yellow block-stitched vinyl. The rear bench seat accommodates two passengers with seat belts (one lap, one three-point) and folds out to form a bed, making this a two-berth camper.
Appliances include a Dometic two-way fridge/freezer installed within the original Westfalia unit, alongside a neatly integrated Dometic twin gas hob and sink combination positioned in place of the original sink. Beneath the rear bench is a 240v hookup with single outlet socket with two USB charging ports.
All interior appliances are powered by a leisure battery supported by a split-charging system.
Up front, the vehicle benefits from an Aircooled Accessories 17-inch steering wheel and an EMPI billet gear shifter, while the remainder of the cabin remains largely original.
This represents a rare opportunity to get behind the wheel of a truly stand-out T2 Westfalia, ready and equipped for long-distance adventures and exploration of the roads less travelled.
