We’re privileged to facilitate the sale of this German-built 1960 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen. Originally owned by the same family in Martinez, just outside San Francisco, USA, the vehicle made its way to the UK while remaining in their ownership, preserving its connection to the family across continents.
Confirmed by the M-Codes, this Split Screen was specified as a kombi, with cargo right doors, left-hand drive. The bodywork was optioned in L345 Light Grey, which it still presents today. Originally supplied to the USA (San Francisco), it was registered in the UK in April 2005 and has remained under the same family ownership ever since.
As seen sign written on the Split, ‘The Bug Stop’ was previously a classic Volkswagen shop based in Martinez, just on the outskirts of San Francisco. It was set up by the cousin of its current owner, who the Split originally belonged to. The business operated from 1983 until 2008, and this Split now serves as a homage both to the business and to the current owner’s cousin. Before being purchased by its current custodian, who flew out to view it and then brought it back to the UK in 1999, it remained unregistered until 2005 as it required essential mechanical recommissioning.
Supporting the Split’s remarkable history is an extensive documentation folder, including servicing receipts and registration cards (the U.S. equivalent of a UK tax disc) dating back to the early 1960s, as well as a Volkswagen birth certificate and its original California number plates.
The exterior of the Split showcases its original L345 light grey paintwork with a strong patina, all of which remains completely untouched apart from the roof, which received a repair paint job due to sun damage. Also visible are a number of memorabilia stickers that offer a glimpse into its past life, adding character and authenticity while connecting it to the culture and era it came from.
Moving inside, the originality continues, with only the front bench having been refreshed with new red basket-weave vinyl upholstery. The dashboard, clocks, door cards, switchgear, handles, and catches all remain original, along with the standard rear removable bench proudly showing 65 years of use. Scattered around the interior sides is a collection of brewery stickers gathered during trips to America by the current owner and his father, along with stickers from beer cans consumed during lockdown which decorate the underside of the roof.
Power comes from a 1,600cc single-port engine, providing a little extra oomph over its original engine, and starts effortlessly on the first turn of the key. Mechanically, everything else remains original.
This Volkswagen is honest, soulful, full of character, and rich with history. It presents a wonderful opportunity to continue its unique story, whether by preserving its originality or using it as the perfect base for a sympathetic project, or more.
