DESCRIPTION

Available to purchase is this 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Bay Window, factory-optioned as a Westfalia Campmobile and still retaining its original interior fittings.

Confirmed by the M-Codes, this T2 was specified as a Kombi with a right-hand sliding door, left-hand drive, and Westfalia Campmobile equipment without the pop-top roof. The bodywork was originally optioned in Pastel White (L90D), a colour it still wears today. Originally supplied to the USA (Washington, D.C.), it later made its way to the West Coast, residing in Corvallis, Oregon before being imported to the UK. It was registered in the UK in August 2005 and has remained in long-term ownership ever since, with just one British keeper over the past 21 years.

The factory Westfalia Campmobile equipment includes a 3/4 rock-and-roll bed, an opposing buddy seat and a hinged table positioned between the seating areas. The cupboards provide ample storage and incorporate a built-in sink with a cold water tap, along with a cool box. As expected of a 55-year-old camping interior furnishings, it shows some signs of wear while remaining functional.

In 2004, the interior underwent a full reupholstery, featuring patterned fabric for the rear seat cushions, off-white vinyl for the front seats and door cards, beige fabric blinds, and a decorative front window blind. All of these elements present in excellent condition today.

Up front, the cabin remains largely untouched, aside from the addition of a Sony stereo and door speakers.

Drawing your attention to the exterior, the vehicle largely retains its original appearance. It is reported that the body underwent a full respray in early 2005 in its original colour, Pastel White (L90D), with two sill repairs carried out at the same time. Since then, it has acquired a number of superficial marks and areas of light surface corrosion around the lower perimeter of the bodywork. However, it is important to emphasise that the underside remains impressively solid and structurally sound, standing as a remarkable testament to the vehicle’s age and careful preservation over the years.

Powering this Bay Window is a 1,776cc twin-port engine equipped with twin Weber 34 ICT carburettors, which starts on the key and runs smoothly.

The sale will be complimented with a fresh service and MOT once the sale is agreed and a deposit has been taken.

There is a wealth of documentation accompanying the T2, along with its original service book and owner’s manual.

As time passes, original examples of T2 Bay Window Westfalias that retain their factory interior fittings are becoming increasingly rare and desirable. This particular example also represents one of the most affordable routes into ownership of an original Westfalia, allowing you to enjoy your camping adventures in true Westfalia style.

While the seat upholstery no longer retains its original Westfalia coverings, this may present an appealing opportunity for a future custodian to return the interior to its original factory specification, further enhancing the vehicle’s authenticity and character.
