We’re proud to offer this beautifully presented 1975 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Westfalia SO73 Campmobile, thoughtfully upgraded to enhance its driving experience while retaining the charm and character that makes a Westfalia so special.
The upgrades are best described as OEM+, with significant investment in the mechanicals to improve performance, handling and drivability without taking away from its original character. The result is a 50-year-old camper that retains its classic Westfalia interior and period appeal, while offering a driving experience that feels far beyond what you’d expect from a vehicle of its era.
Confirmed by the M-Codes, this T2 was specified as a Kombi with a five-seat arrangement (2-0-3), a right-hand sliding door, left-hand drive, and Westfalia Campmobile equipment with a pop-top roof. The bodywork was originally optioned in Brilliant Orange (L20B), a colour it still wears today. Originally supplied to the USA (Washington, D.C.), it was registered in the UK in January 1992 and has since had four British keepers.
Beginning with the mechanicals, powering this T2 is an upgraded 2,100cc engine producing a dyno-proven 127bhp. This setup comprises twin Weber 40 IDF carburettors, an external oil cooler and filter and a Vintage Speed exhaust system.
As for its handling, the front suspension has been upgraded with coilovers and Spax adjustable front dampers, while front and rear anti-roll bars significantly improve its handling performance without compromising comfort.
The factory Westfalia Campmobile interior includes a pop-top roof bed, a full-width rock-and-roll bed, an opposing buddy seat, a side-facing seat and a table positioned between the seating areas. The cupboards provide ample storage, along with under-seat storage, while the incorporated sink has been upgraded with an electric cold-water tap. Considering the interior furnishings are over 50 years old, they present in incredible condition.
All upholstery remains in its original “Camping Red Cloth”, with the exception of the front seats, which have been reupholstered in a period-correct basket-weave vinyl that is considerably more hard-wearing. The pop-top roof canopy has seen some small repairs but remains in perfectly usable condition.
Additions to the interior include an Eberspächer petrol heater, LED lighting, a 12V socket and a leisure system, with power supplied through the roof-mounted solar panel. Up front, the cabin features an Aircooled Accessories steering wheel, a Gene Berg shifter, oil temperature and pressure gauges, and a digital radio/MP3 player.
Moving to the exterior, it largely remains original to US specification, with the exception of the SSP BRM wheels on which it proudly sits. The exterior has previously undergone a full respray in its original colour, along with some minor welding repairs to the cabin floor, which are nothing unusual for a vehicle of this age. Since then, it has acquired a number of superficial marks around the bodywork.
It is important to emphasise that the underside remains impressively solid and structurally sound, standing as a remarkable testament to the vehicle’s age and careful preservation over the years.
