We’re proud to offer this 1970 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Bay Window Panel Van, extensively restored with all-new parts and accompanied by over £30,000 worth of documented invoices and receipts.
The panel van is one of the rarer variants of the T2 Bay Window, and opportunities to purchase one that has received this level of investment and restoration are few and far between. This is your opportunity to get behind the wheel of a mechanically well-sorted, restored example, available for a fraction of the total investment that has been put into it.
As confirmed by it’s Volkswagen birth certificate, this German-built T2 was originally supplied to the Netherlands in April 1970. It was registered in the UK in 2019 and has had three UK keepers since.
Beginning with the exterior, the body received a full respray in satin grey, closely resembling Audi’s renowned Nardo Grey. The bumpers were resprayed in white, providing a nice contrast against the bodywork.
As panel vans were built to work for a living, they often carry the scars and character of their past, meaning it’s rare to find one with perfectly straight bodywork. Even after a full restoration, it’s not uncommon for the panels to retain some subtle imperfections that are simply part of the vehicle’s history and character, and this one is no different.
The existing sign-writing on the bodywork perfectly demonstrates the potential this T2 Panel Van offers as a distinctive and eye-catching promotional vehicle for a business.
All exterior trims and accessories were purchased brand new at the time of the restoration, including the SSP Sprintstar alloy wheels it sits on.
Powering this Bay Window is a 1,641cc engine, fitted with twin 40 IDF carburettors, a full-flow oil system with an external oil filter and a Vintage Speed exhaust system, all mated to a rebuilt gearbox. Within the engine bay is a VW Aircooled Works automatic fire suppression system for peace of mind.
The investment further extends to the underside, with a 2” narrowed beam, adjustable rear spring plates and KYB shocks accommodating the lowered ride height. The brakes have been upgraded with a CSP front caliper kit and brake servo. All this is bolted to a rust-free, fully undersealed underside and structure.
Moving inside, the interior has undergone a comprehensive transformation. All seats, including the rock-and-roll rear bench, along with the door cards, have been reupholstered in contrasting patterned textile and grey vinyl. The upholstery work further extends to the rear panelling, finished in grey faux-suede, with the roof lining finished in perforated vinyl.
Up front, the cockpit benefits from an MCJ oak-rim steering wheel, an EMPI gear shifter and VDO gauges for monitoring engine revs, oil temperature and oil pressure.
A leisure battery with split charging has been installed to provide power for the interior spotlights, USB ports and 12V charging points throughout the vehicle.
This T2 offers an incredibly versatile ownership proposition. It would make a fantastic companion for weekends away, road trips and events, while its spacious and adaptable load area also makes it an ideal foundation for a commercial vehicle. Whether used as a vintage-inspired promotional vehicle, a mobile display or a distinctive work van, it offers businesses a fantastic way to stand out from the crowd and create a memorable presence.
