Ant Anstead: Born Mechanic Season 1, Episode 2, “VW Camper: A ’70s Revival,” follows automotive TV presenter Ant Anstead as he takes on a classic restoration challenge: a 1977 Volkswagen T2 Bay Window Campervan that had been left as an unfinished project.
The feature vehicle was one that we supplied to the show, belonging to a loyal customer of ours. It was a project that simply hadn’t been given the time needed to be completed. With the owner eager to enjoy the camper lifestyle without further delay, we supplied them with a fully complete and ready-to-use T2 campervan. This meant the yellow 1977 project vehicle needed to be moved on, opening the door for its next chapter.
Quite remarkably, the yellow T2 hadn’t been listed for more than 24 hours before we received the call to say that Ant was interested in purchasing it. He immediately saw its potential and wanted to make it part of his mission to restore and sell classic vehicles for profit, helping to fund the renovation of a 500-year-old farmhouse he is restoring for his parents. It was a perfect match for the show, an iconic VW and huge potential, exactly the kind of project that Born Mechanic needed.
Filming of the collection took place on the forecourt of our Shardlow, Derbyshire based site. We displayed all of the stock we had available for sale at the time, showcasing a variety of classic Volkswagens and setting the scene for the episode. The T2’s owner also came along to meet Ant and his Dad in person and was delighted to be part of the TV experience, watching their former project begin an exciting new journey. The negotiations and handover process are all captured in the episode, giving viewers a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how the T2 changed hands.
Once filming had been completed, Ant very kindly provided us with a video message that we were able to share across our social media channels, helping to promote both the show and our involvement in it. It was a fantastic moment for Absolute VW and a proud reminder of the role we play in sourcing and supplying a TV piece.
With the success and popularity of the series continuing to grow, Ant has recently announced (January 2026) that Season 3 of Born Mechanic is on its way.
