We’re proud to present this charming 1965 Volkswagen Beetle – a UK-supplied, right hand drive, unwelded example that retains all of its originality, thanks to the care of its two owners since new.
Originally purchased from Volkswagen Shirley in May 1965, this Beetle spent the first 50 years of its life with its original owner, an engineer who meticulously maintained and preserved it. Owing to changing circumstances, the car was reluctantly sold to help fund care home costs. The current owner purchased it as a 40th birthday treat to themselves and has cherished it over the past decade. Over the course of this Beetle’s life, a large collection of service records, tax discs, owner’s manuals, and Volkswagen marketing materials has been lovingly archived.
The 1965 Beetle model is notable as the last to feature the 1,200cc engine and solid, non-slotted (‘smoothie’) steel wheels. Volkswagen introduced several updates to this model, including larger windows all around, subtly thinned backs on the front bucket seats to improve rear legroom, and reshaped front seat backrests for added comfort. These updates formed part of the Beetle’s ongoing evolution toward greater practicality.
This Beetle’s bodywork is impressively well preserved, retaining all its original panels in the factory L518 Java Green finish. The overall body condition is very good, with subtle patination from small marks and touch-ups that add to its character.
Drawing your attention to the underside, it is presented in solid condition with no evidence of any previous welding work. Nor does it require any now, as the underseal and waxing have preserved the chassis incredibly well.
The interior remains completely untouched. The seats upholstery retains their factory two-tone mesh grey ‘salt and pepper’ vinyl. The passenger seat and rear bench are in excellent condition, while the driver’s seat shows some signs of age-related wear. The headlining and carpets remain in great condition.
Following a recent appraisal by ourselves, the Beetle has benefited from an engine service and new rear brakes, leaving it ready for immediate enjoyment.
