We’re proud to offer the sale of this remarkable 1970 Volkswagen Type 2 T2 Bay Window 4-berth camper van.
This Bay Window began its life as a 7 seater Microbus in New York. It crossed the pond in 2014, coming under ownership with two UK previous owners, the most recent of whom cherished this vehicle for over 10 years. No expense has been spared in the upkeep of this late Bay Window. Furthermore, it has undergone an extensive transformation with a range of carefully chosen upgrades.
Starting with the exterior, it has undergone a full respray in pastel white, while still preserving original spec white bumpers, chrome trims and accessories. Its tin-top roof has made way for a pop top using a Westfalia reproduction rear-hinged roof with a dark red canopy and an upper bed that sleeps two. The roof system is equipped with gas struts for ease of operation and is completed with a front luggage cap.
A tow hook with electrics has been installed, providing the opportunity for traveling with extra luggage in a trailer, mounting a bicycle carrier, or towing a motorcycle for local travel when set up on location.
Moving inside, the interior has undergone a comprehensive transformation. The two Microbus rear benches have been replaced with a single full-width rock and roll bed. All seats including the rock and roll bed, rear mattress, pop top bed mattress, and door cards have been upholstered in dark red vinyl. The headlining and the underside of the pop top have been upholstered in white vinyl.
Up front, the dashboard retains its original clocks, with the addition of an integrated rev counter gauge. It also features an oil pressure and temperature gauge below the dash and a fuel cut-off system. A Pioneer head unit has been installed, currently wired to a twin Pioneer speaker unit on the floor (not pictured). This was used as a temporary solution, as the previous owner refrained from cutting the newly refurbished door cards to make way for speakers.
This Bay Window is powered by a 1,915cc engine with twin Weber 40 IDF carburettors, a stainless steel CSP exhaust system and a 123 Ignition Tune+ programmable distributor, which offers a range of features, including a fully programmable ignition curve via an app on your iOS or Android phone. This is mated with a rebuilt gearbox with taller gearing.
The underside has received several substantial upgrades, including a Red9 Design subframe that provides adjustability for vehicle height, stiffness, camber, caster, and toe. It also enhances steering by incorporating a rack-and-pinion system, eliminating unwanted steering linkage play from the original setup. Furthermore, it is equipped with damping adjustable Spax shock absorbers and servo assisted brakes, resulting in a well-sorted chassis.
The overall condition of this vehicles is exceptional, with no signs of corrosion. Please refer to the walkaround video on our website for a more detailed look.
