During the summer of 2025, we were visited by a couple eager to join the world of classic Volkswagens. Their dream? A Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen as their first step into classic car ownership.
They were immediately drawn to a 1964 Split Screen we had for sale. Finished in Pastel White over Sealing Wax Red, a stunning UK-supplied example with only one family owner from new. Completely preserved and mechanically original, present with its vintage Canterbury Pitt conversion with all original furnishings. This van was backed by a treasure trove of historic documentation. It was what we call a true “time warp” example.
At Absolute VW, we have a deep appreciation for these untouched classics, vehicles that take you back to how driving used to feel. But as we often remind new owners, originality isn’t always synonymous with drivability.
After a test drive, it became clear that the braking performance of the original drum brakes on the ’64 Split did not inspire the confidence they had hoped for. Fortunately, we had another Split Screen available, fitted with a servo-assisted front disc brake conversion. The difference was transformative. After experiencing the upgraded setup, the couple decided that this was exactly what their dream Split needed to inspire confidence behind the wheel, and the deal was sealed.
The brake disc conversion we installed is one that we’ve supplied for many of our customers’ vehicles. It’s a conversion kit curated by PCD Parts, utilising Wilwood brake calipers and all the supporting hardware designed for Volkswagen Split Screens. The setup was further complemented by a brake servo, which multiplies the braking force applied through the pedal for improved performance and confidence on the road.
As with everything we sell, we ensure all vehicles are fully roadworthy before being handed over to their new owners. If any servicing work is required, it’s completed as part of the agreed package when purchasing a vehicle from Absolute VW. Upon request, the advantage of having our own MOT testing bay allows buyers to obtain certification of roadworthiness in line with current guidelines. This is one of the many benefits of having our own workshop – it enables us to prepare our vehicles properly and provide complete support to our customers.
The ’64 Split received a thorough service, including the replacement of all fluids and the installation of new rear axle boots. We also corrected the steering wheel alignment, which was off-centre, and fitted a new steering pin and track rod, followed by fine-tuning the wheel tracking. In addition, we always advise potential buyers of any areas that may require attention in the short term or as part of their long-term goals.
