We are thrilled to offer this incredibly rare, 1960 German-built 15-window Volkswagen Split Screen for sale. A true gem in the world of classic VW buses, this particular model is an original German-produced variant, making it one of the more sought-after examples.
This pre-1964 Hardtop Deluxe Bus stands out as an exceptionally rare find. Identical in trim and features to the famed 23-window Deluxe Bus—minus the eight roof windows and sunroof—this model, with the M-Code 130, denotes a Deluxe version without the roof windows and sunroof.
This bus began its life in the U.S. before being imported to the UK in 2008. Since its arrival, it has been under the care of a single owner who immediately undertook extensive work to preserve its originality. Key areas, including the inner and outer sills, outriggers, jacking points, and rear corners, were carefully restored and blended with Sealing Wax Red paint to maintain a robust and solid body.
Despite the vehicle’s age, it shows minimal corrosion. Minor surface rust contributes to its distinguished patina, further enhanced by its original beige-grey over Sealing Wax Red paintwork. This unique appearance has been preserved under a layer of lacquer, adding to the bus’s charm and authenticity.
Beneath its patina paintwork, this Split Screen boasts a solid, rust-free chassis. The vehicle has also undergone moderate lowering modifications to improve its stance and performance. These upgrades include:
- A two-inch steering box raise
- Straight axle conversion at the rear
- Dropped spindles at the front
- A 5.5” narrowed beam for a sleek look
In addition, the bus is fitted with chrome Fuchs wheels and a CSP front brake caliper with a disc brake conversion for better stopping power. Topping it off, a rare original HWE roof rack adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The interior of this Split Screen has been beautifully transformed into a day camper, ideal for road trips or weekend getaways. It features:
- A rear rock ‘n’ roll bench
- A custom-built cabinet along the bulkhead
- All seats and door panels reupholstered in light brown and cream leather
- Wooden flooring in the rear, with bespoke carpets throughout
For added charm, the headliner is crafted from Dennis the Menace comic-themed fabric, and there are blinds for all rear windows, along with matching cushions—including one for your dog! A Petri steering wheel, USB/MP3 stereo, and JBL speakers complete the front cabin.
Under the hood, you’ll find the original 1,500cc single-port engine paired with the matching gearbox. After recently coming out of storage, we’ve replaced all the fuel lines with 100% ethanol-resistant components, ensuring the bus runs reliably and efficiently.
